Consider for a moment that you are an Olympic gymnast. You just competed in your favourite event and are waiting on the podium to receive your medal. How did you get there? Was it an accident that you arrived at the Olympics ready to compete at your best and win a medal?
I hope your answer is a solid no, it was no accident.
Fortune or luck aside, you are in a podium position because of dedicated, disciplined, and purposeful efforts sustained over years.
“you’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk?”
Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry
When it comes to your general experience or feeling throughout the day. What got you to where you are today? If you were to examine the “training program” of your life over the past few decades, what would it reveal? Do you approach your daily routines with the same level of discipline, dedication, and purposefulness as an Olympic athlete?
If you are still reading you probably came to the conclusion that your general state or feeling throughout your day might resemble a roll of the dice of random emotional assortments governed by external situations more than the training program of an Olympic athlete.
Role of Luck in Feeling Great
While luck, good or bad, may have a role to play
On average, we all have a similar amount of luck, distributed along a curve where some of you may seem to have more good or bad luck than others. Our hypothetical gymnast certainly would have experienced strokes of good luck, such as growing up in a town with a renowned training program, they would also have encountered setbacks, like sustaining an injury before a crucial competition. What would set most olympians apart from those who maybe could have competed is how they navigated the highs and lows with discipline and purpose.
Making good luck stick
On a purposeful journey there are a few things that will help reduce the impact of bad luck and increase the surface area for good luck to stick.
Setting Clear Goals:
Achieving a general feeling of greatness in your daily life begins with setting clear goals for your emotional well-being. Define what feeling great means to you and outline actions you can take towards your definition. Whether it’s prioritizing self-care, cultivating positive relationships, or pursuing personal passions, having a clear vision will guide your efforts. If you find along the way that your definition changes, then adapt and change your actions.
Implementing Plans with Discipline:
After establishing your goals, the next step is to implement your plan with discipline and consistency. Just as our gymnast would have adhered to a rigorous training regimen, you too must commit to daily practices that promote your well-being. Whether it’s starting each morning with mindfulness meditation, incorporating regular exercise into your routine, or practicing gratitude before bed, consistency is key to making meaningful progress.
Effort and Persistence:
You will encounter obstacles and setbacks on the journey to feeling great. However, it is your action and persistence that will ultimately determine success. Don’t be afraid to make use of help. The gymnast would have a whole team around her. Put your team together and get the right equipment. Some of your equipment might include a trusty mechanical pencil and journal, or favorite rock?
Use whatever you need to push through fatigue in the face of life happening. Whether it is overcoming negative thought patterns, navigating challenging relationships, or bouncing back from setbacks, your ability to keep going is what will set you apart.
Adapting to Change:
Life is unpredictable, and circumstances can and will change in an instant. Just as top athletes have to adapt to unforeseen challenges in their training, you must also learn to navigate the ups and downs. Whether it is adjusting your routines in response to shifting priorities, embarking on new opportunities, or finding different ways to manage stress. Your ability to adapt ensures that you will stay resilient. Again, if you find your definitions or priorities are changing, change your approach with them.
In conclusion, achieving a general feeling of greatness in your daily life is more than a matter of luck or happenstance. It will be the result of disciplined, purposeful action, sustained over time. By setting clear goals, implementing plans with discipline and persistence, and adapting to change, you can cultivate a lasting sense of feeling great that enriches every aspect of your life and those around you.
